Build Your Own Wine Storage
If there’s one thing you can never have enough of, it’s more space. The same certainly holds true if you’re an avid wine collector. On the one hand you enjoy building your collection and planning the special dates to pop the cork.
But on the other, you have to pay close attention to proper storage procedures to assure the wine maintains its alluring taste and aroma. So how do you find the space to store your ever growing collection? Easy…You build it!
Building your own wine storage rack or cabinet need not be a huge production. With a little planning and a tad bit of creativity, you can end up with a great looking and functional new home for your favorite hobby.
Wine racks come in various shapes and sizes. Here we will cover the basics and show you what is needed to get going today. There are 2 primary options:
- There are many simple instruction manuals available for a modest sum online. Do a quick search for: “how to build your own wine storage” or other similar keywords.
- Purchase a pre-packaged kit and have it shipped to you.
Unless you have experience with these types of projects, I would recommend cutting your teeth on option number 2. By ordering a pre-packaged kit, you have peace of mind in knowing that all of the right components are there, and all you have to focus on is the assembly.
Make sure you order a rack in which all bottles of wine can be stored horizontally for proper preservation. If not stored properly, the cork may shrink, and air will seep into the bottle, ultimately diminishing the wine.
Whether you are designing your own wine rack or ordering a pre-packaged kit, you should consider that wine bottles come in various sizes. You do not want to purchase a rack that can only fit the slimmest of wine bottles. If in doubt, it’s best to ask for measurements before the order is placed.
Two More Options
While there are literally dozens of options to be had with wine storage racks, one decision you should make early on is the type of rack you prefer:
- Wine racks with individual slots for each bottle
- Wine racks that fit several wines in each slot
There are advantages and disadvantages to each style. Slots that can fit multiple bottles will accommodate all sorts of styles and sizes. However, some may not find this approach as visually appealing as each bottle is not showcased. It can also be difficult to find what you are looking for with rows of bottles to search through.
Racks with individual storage slots allow you to display each bottle and label for easy access. Of course, these racks are not quite as space efficient and may not accommodate all sizes. We strongly recommend asking for measurements up front.
