Champagne is one of the most enjoyed wine beverages. It is common at any celebration, including weddings, New Year ’s Eve, and to celebrate birth.

But to properly enjoy champagne you need to have the right type of glassware. This is where champagne flutes are especially useful.

The Champagne Flute

Champagne flutes are wine glasses with long, narrow bowls. They feature stems in order to hold the glass without warming the Champagne (as the champagne flavor is greatly diminished it warms).

The thin bowl is designed for a very specific purpose – to retain the champagne’s carbonation level by reducing the amount of surface area at the bowl’s opening. This trick keeps the champagne tingly over a much longer period of time.

In addition, the smooth surface area of the glass allows the glass to prevent “nucleation,” which is the creation of the bubbles on the glass that causes the drink to lose its fizz, and since texture is also a major part of enjoying champagne, it is a worthwhile feature.

Alternative Uses

Champagne flutes are also used for other drinks, such as certain upscale beers. A few standard liquor drinks may sometimes be served in these glasses, as can regular wine (since the glasses appear to be very stylish for parties) but in general their use is limited to champagne and beer. These glasses are very fragile, so they are rarely used in public drinking houses like bars.

Cheap champagne glasses tend to work just as well as their more expensive counterparts, so it is not uncommon to see them used even in the most affluent of homes. And since they both do not take up much room and are more fragile than standard wine glasses, it is always a good idea to stock up on a few to ensure that if one breaks at a party you have an available replacement.
