Cocktail Dress Attire
When attending a cocktail party, it is expected that you keep to the proper Cocktail attire. Although a cocktail party is generally considered an informal event, for most people it still requires what is considered generally formal wear, and it must have a good degree of professionalism as cocktail parties tend to be a place where the atmosphere defines the experience.
For Men
Men’s cocktail attire is slightly easier to describe, as in general men should wear a suit, especially a suit jacket. It is arguable whether jeans would be permissible if the suit is especially elegant, but most likely the standard dress pants will also be required. This is not black tie, so no tuxedos, but one is expected to wear dark clothing. Any darker, sexier suits and ties are likely your best bet for the standard cocktail party.
For Women
For women, cocktail dress attire is slightly more difficult, but the key is in the old phrase “little black dress.” Again, the purpose of cocktail parties is to be professional but sexy, and so a dark dress is expected that is generally short (around the knees) and displays as much skin as possible without being considered too revealing. Brighter dresses are appropriate for some events, but use your own judgment before assuming that bright pink is acceptable given the situation.
Accessories are a plus, but they should be limited to less gaudy items, like a thin gold necklace and pendant. Earrings would normally be diamonds or thinner hoops in order to avoid too much extravagance.
All of the clothing should be tight fitting. Silk and satin are most common. High heeled shoes are generally expected as well, in order to keep with the sexy/elegant atmosphere.
And always remember that it is proper not to upstage the host.
For Both
Cocktail party attire is generally designed around elegance and sexuality. The Cocktail party is a place to enjoy and have a good time with friends, but at the same time manage to look your best and most professional while still showing as much skin and as little fabric as you can get away with.
