That “little black dress” hangs in your closet and you’ve probably used it every time you didn’t know what to wear or didn’t have time to shop right? This time why not go the extra mile to get that “wow” reaction from friends and family.

So what’s appropriate to wear for a cocktail party?

You can never go wrong with wearing a dress to a party. With all the other decisions you need to make why not simplify things by sticking with a dress.

Although if your heart is set on a stunning skirt or suit then go with that, as long as your invitation says casual or semi-casual.

What’s a good sleeve length for the occasion?

There are no general rules for the appropriate sleeve length so wear whatever you’re most comfortable in.

Do I bring a coat or cover up?

• For a late evening cocktail party a coat would be prudent but bringing something as simple as a wrap or light formal jacket would be fine too
• If you’re unsure of what the temperature will be then bring both
• As a rule of thumb, if you can’t pick the right color to match your dress then go with the ever matching black rule
• You’ll enjoy the party more if you’re not shivering from the temperature of the room or outdoors

If it’s semi-formal do I wear hose?

Yes, even if the party is only semi-formal it’s more appropriate to wear hose under your skirt or dress. Sheer black or a nude color will suffice for the occasion.

What’s the best type of shoes to wear?

• In today’s society both open and closed-toed shoes are acceptable for a formal or informal event
• If the shoes are open-toed then go for seamless hosiery

What necklace goes best with my dress’s neckline?

• V-line dress- a longer necklace with a simple drop for a flattering affect that doesn’t take away from the look
• Round neck dress- a 15 inch or less chain with a decorative pendant or charm or choker
• Boat cut- a long chain with a larger flashy pendant or charm
