Differences In Wine Glasses

There is a great deal of science that goes into the creation of the wine glass. Unlike standard dinner cups, wine glasses are not just meant to be aesthetically pleasing. They are designed to do two different things:

  1. To emphasize the flavor and aroma.
  2. To direct the wine towards a specific part of the mouth in order to enjoy its flavor.

The stem of the glass, as well, is also designed for a purpose. Its shape is meant to provide a way to hold the glass without the body heat from your hands warming the wine. Some glasses are also designed to ensure fingertips to not touch the clear glass and cause smudges, as well as swirl the wine around in its bowl.

Wine glasses are divided into three types

  1. Red Wine Glasses
  2. White Wine Glasses
  3. Champagne Flutes

Differences in Wine Glasses

Red wine glasses are much rounder, with a wider mouth allowing the wine to breathe better. There are tall glasses meant to direct the wine to the back of the tongue. There are also shorter glasses with even wider bowls in order to enhance the aromas of some of the more delicate wines.

White wine glasses, on the other hand, are narrower and generally designed to prevent the wine from warming, as white wine is almost always meant to be enjoyed cold.

Champagne flutes are also meant to avoid warming, though using a different method than white wine glasses. White wine glasses prevent warming by providing less surface area for air to warm the contents. Champagne flutes, on the other hand are longer and significantly narrower, allowing the fingers to grip the glass without putting one’s hand on the bowl. Champagne flutes are also designed to prevent carbonation from leaving the contents.

The differences in wine glasses are meant to tap all the potential in a given wine. Those that appreciate wine should also have the correct wine glasses available so they can fully enjoy the flavors and aroma the way they were meant to be enjoyed.
