Making Apple Cider At Home
Apple Cider is more than just a holiday beverage – it is a way to spice up the winter and warm your body during the cold weather months. For kids, it can be warm apple cider served in front of the television. For adults, it may be hard apple cider for you and your friends. With both methods, nothing tastes better than serving cider that you made yourself, at home. And contrary to popular belief, it is not too difficult to make apple cider at home.
Instructions for Making Apple Cider
Step 1 – Getting Apples
The first step is to go to the grocery store and choose some cider apples. You may need to go to a Farmers Market or to your local produce store, because cider apples are not always found at your local grocery stores. Though in reality most apples can be used to make some form of cider, just not necessarily with the same flavors as store bought ciders.
Step 2 – Grinding the Apples
Once you have chosen your apples you will need to grind them up. Cut them into quarters and puree them, and extract the juice by taking a “jelly bag” and rolling over it with a rolling pin. There are also cider presses you can buy at the store, and juicers may be acceptable as well.
Step 3 – Acid leveling
Find some way to check the pH level, which needs to be within 3.9 to 4.0. If it is not in this range, you will need to add malic acid, which can also be picked up at special stores, and if you need to raise the pH you need to use something like precipitated chalk.
You can add sugar (about 2 ounces per gallon if you like, but it is not necessary and can be added after the juice is done fermenting.
Step 4 – Fermenting
Place the juice in some type of fermenting holder. Put it in an airlock and wait. Once it has reached the desired gravity, you are done. Cool the beverage, drink, and enjoy.
