The Short Term Effect of Alcohol on the Nervous System

You may well know what alcohol does to your body physically when you drink it (i.e. making bad decisions, stumbling and slurred speech) but what is it doing to your nervous system?

When you drink some alcohol, it gets into your blood stream and then into your nervous system. The nervous system is the part of your body that runs almost all of your bodily functions. When you put a depressant, such as alcohol, into your nervous system, it slows the system down.

That means all of your bodily functions will slow down because the alcohol delays the messages you are sending to your brain relating to motions you want your body to make. This would explain why you are a little off-balanced and may slur your speech when you have had too much to drink.

Too much alcohol can cause even more ill effects on the nervous system. As a person drinks more and more they may start to lose control over some of their bodily functions.

If too excessive amounts of alcohol are taken in, the person may suffer alcohol poisoning, where a doctor’s care will be necessary to help them safely recover from all the alcohol that is being absorbed by their system.
