Cocktail Strainers
Cocktail strainers are a vital piece of equipment in many pubs and bars, offering the perfect way to strain ice from a freshly shaken cocktail. Two Types Of Strainers
The two main types of cocktail strainer are Hawthorn and Julep strainers, each with their own advantages. The Hawthorn strainer is perforated, flat and circular with a metal spring around the rim that can roll inwards to fit inside the glass, and the spring helps to filter out the ice whilst letting the liquid through. Julep strainers are concave and will fit tightly inside the glass when on an angle, and have several dozen small holes instead of a spring to filter out the ice. Both are just as effective and it will largely come down to the type of glass that needs to be used and, of course, personal preference.
No matter what type of cocktail strainer is chosen, they all have a number of advantages. In many cocktail recipes it’s not necessary to have the ice in the finished cocktail and cocktail strainers offer the ideal solution to removing it. There’s no fiddling about and no having to fish out the ice if it ends up going into the drink; the design of the strainers allow for complete control over your drinks and your ice.
