Drink Mixology is the art of creating a tasty and spirited drink. While some people have to rely on a bartender's guide for this role, a true drink mixologist knows how to create their own drinks by understanding how the items they have behind the bar will work together.

The basis of drink mixology is that a mixed drink, or cocktail, has three items in it. The first is a spirit. Without some sort of alcohol, it's just a kiddie drink.Next a mixer will be added which will work with that spirit without taking over the flavor. And finally, some sort of flavoring is added to the drink, to complete the taste.

While there were mixed drinks before this time, mixologists became very popular in the 1920's because it was a time of prohibition. That means no alcohol was able to be served in the U.S. But that didn't stop people from having it. A number of bootlegging operations popped up and delivered the taboo spirits to speakeasies, and it was the bartender's job to make sure to mask a drink well enough, with other ingredients to make it taste like something else.

Cocktail Drink

For many years the majority of mixed cocktails were made with gin, whiskey and rum. But vodka started gaining in popularity in the 70's and from then on became the more popular base for mixed drinks.
