English Pub Signs
If you want your home to have the flair of an old English pub, you can't do it without the right signage.
Signs are a writ of passage for English pubs. Not only were they a way to let people know they were selling alcohol, they often were also a method of bragging. Many English pub signs are ways to show off that they won awards or that special local events that were held in that location.
If you ever wondered why English pub signs are so colorful, part of the reason may be because of their history. While it is common these days to know how to read and write, that was not always the case. In the middle ages, those who were walking through a town could rarely read. Instead they relied on pictures to let them know which establishment to visit. For that reason, early signs had illustrations of mugs and other items relating to brewing, to let passers by know where they could be served a hearty drink.
As literacy became more common, many of these pubs adapted their original signs to have names and designations, but still kept with the unique and colorful designs that also adorned the signs.
To this day, most English pubs still show off their signs as a way to guide the public in for a drink. So, if you're trying to recreate this atmosphere in your home, a pub sign, or even a metal sign or poster that looks like the real thing, is a must.
