Castle Lager is South Africa’s premium beer brand that has been enjoyed by people the world over since the late 1800s. Its dry, bitter taste offers the ultimate beer flavour and has won countless awards since its conception.

Castle Lager was created by Charles Glass in 1884. He was born in Kent, England, but went to South Africa during the Gold Rush, where he came across a different type of gold – beer. He set up a brewery in 1884 and quickly created the now-infamous Castle Lager, with subsequent breweries and beer brands being set up in his name.

It's Popularity Begins

Castle Lager quickly became popular, and it was loved by many for its refreshing, full flavour that’s well-balanced yet manages to quench a thirst. The advertising for the brand touts it as being “the beer that stood the test of time”, having a “somewhat bitter, somewhat dry, never sweet” taste that’s perfectly balanced and well-rounded.

The bottles are headlined by the iconic castle image, something that’s been around since it began. It’s won countless awards in its time, including being named the “World’s Best Bottled Lager” at the International Brewing Industry Awards in 2000.

Produced In The Castle Brewery

The Castle Lager brand is still produced by Castle Brewery although it has since merged with others to form South African Breweries. It produces many other lagers and beers as well as the original Castle Lager, although it’s argued that the original is still the best.

At 5% ABV, Castle Lager is loved not only for its flavour but also for its alcohol content. Being able to please even the most ardent beer drinkers, it isn’t hard to see why it’s so popular. It’s brewed in 9 countries but is exported to over 40, with people all over the world being able to enjoy it.

The lager is available in bottles, cans and on-tap, so whatever type of beer you want and wherever you are you’ll be able to enjoy a nice cold Castle Lager. When serving it at home always remember that it needs to be chilled, and for the best effect it’s a good idea to serve it in a proper lager glass for that traditional feel.

It isn’t hard to see why Castle Lager is such a popular beer brand, and with such a wide range of places you can enjoy it it’s no wonder it’s so popular. If you haven’t tried it yet then it’s definitely worth considering, whether at home or down your local.
